Portion Distortion and That Magic Number

Each time I leave my therapist’s office, she gives me homework assignments. This last time I saw her, one of my assignments was to look up the calorie intakes for two versions of me: me at my ideal weight, me at my current weight.

What an eye opener.

It was shocking to learn that in order for me to maintain my ideal weight, I would have to consume 650 calories less than what I was currently consuming to maintain my current weight.

That’s like a meal and a half!

Part of me doesn’t think I could’ve been consuming that much. But at the same time, how else could I have reached the weight I’m at right now? It didn’t magically show up on me overnight.

Long story short, I’m back to calorie counting. Before I was just eyeballing my portions, occasionally counting calories here and there, and listening to my body for signals that it’s satisfied. But being aware of my weight every day has shown me that it’s important to be cognizant of my progress. Not only do I have to be aware of what I’m expending, but I also have to be aware of what I’m consuming.

Essentially I’ve put together the following calorie budget for myself:

So far it hasn’t been too difficult to stick to, except for the occasional run in with potential de-railers like donuts this morning at the office and fudge brownie sundae’s yesterday for March birthday celebrants. I haven’t given in (significantly) yet. I did have a mini Toblerone that one of my coworkers brought back from her trip to Europe, but it was a tiny indulgence, no bigger than the size of my thumb, which I noted.

Sometimes I feel like I’ve been going around in circles with this weight thing, like I’ve been down this road before, like Googling some cryoslimming near me would just fix everything. I’m worried that I’ll hit another brick wall. But I think that’s only because I’m still at this weight range I was in when I first started trying to lose weight 10 years ago.

There’s this magic number in my head where my weight loss stopped and reversed itself back then. And each time I realized I was out of control, my weight was higher each time. I need to get past that number. I guess I have it in my head that once I get past it, I’ll know I’ll finally be out of the woods.

I just have to remember that once I get past it, I can’t stop. I have a long road ahead of me if I want to get down to a healthy weight.

What Do You Love?

Lately I’ve been feeling like a hamster in a cage. I have my cedar chip bed, my bowls of water and food, and my hamster wheel.

That fucking hamster wheel.

Yesterday would’ve been my 6th workout in 7 days but the thought of going to the gym repulsed me so I opted to stay home. I needed a break. Plus I had my carpets cleaned yesterday so I needed to start moving my furniture back into place.

Today I had to do something to lift my spirits a bit. After spending most of the day reading up about event tracking in Google Analytics, at 4:30 I decided I needed a brain break. I grabbed my wallet and my sweater and I headed for the elevators.

2015-03-11 17.01.20It was a beautiful day. The sun came out for the first time since the day after the last time it snowed so I took a stroll over to the bakery down the street, picked up my favorite little cake, and walked over to the park.

It was a ritual I adopted a few weeks ago before the frozen precipitation invaded the area. I sat down on a park bench and I enjoyed my cake and the nice weather. This reminded me of what I love about my life.

I love that I can be by myself sometimes, or surrounded by friends other times. I love the fact that I work at a company where I can take a break in the middle of a taxing day and enjoy the outdoors for a bit.  I love sitting on a park bench, basking in the warmth of the sun while people watching.

When you’re feeling run down, sometimes it’s important to recharge your battery by reminding yourself of what makes you happy in life. Check out this link to the original source and make sure that your pets are safe.

Eating Like an Athlete

Super Easy Museli Prep
This museli recipe is made with my favorite apples: honeycrisp.

I’ve taken to listening to podcasts during my workout sessions instead of music. I find that it actually takes my mind away from the activity at hand.

Last week I discovered Another Mother Runner Radio on iTunes and there was one particular podcast that I listened to featuring the bloggers from Athletefood.com. When I browsed their website after my workout, I discovered a couple recipes that sounded really healthy and delicious.

I decided to try making their Chia Museli (visit the link for their recipe) and it was so easy and delicious. I love the idea of just making a base mix that you can keep in the fridge so whenever you’re ready for breakfast, all you have to do is scoop out a healthy portion (1/2 to 3/4 up for me) and then top it with a variety of toppings to change it up.

So far I’ve topped mine with:

  • Toasted coconut chips
  • A drizzle of maple syrup
  • Dried blueberries
  • Dried cranberries
  • Avocado
  • Brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • Sliced almonds
  • Walnuts
  • (or a combination of 2-3 of the above!)
I topped this one with avocado and toasted coconut chips.

This is definitely one recipe I’m going to keep in my collection. In addition to their blog, they also shared some great tips on eating healthy when you have a packed schedule. Here are a couple takeaways from that:

  1. Try to fit in meal prep in between activities, such as chopping vegetables, marinating meat, etc.
  2. Have a handful of recipes in your repertoire that are basic enough to easily change up for variety.
  3. Use spice mixes! Healthy food doesn’t have to be bland.

What Motivates You?

IMG_6462I’m 10 miles approaching my 60 mile reward.

A few weeks ago I decided I needed something to commemorate my achievements with something special. I’ve always wanted a charm bracelet, but I knew it would be a bit of a splurge so I waited until I truly found a reason to treat myself.

When I began running, I realized this would be a perfect time to celebrate with a little reward when I met my first goal of 30 miles. So on Friday January 16, I decided to go to the Dallas Galleria Pandora jewelry store on my lunch break.

I already had an idea of what I wanted. In fact I had customized my bracelet online and printed out a list. When I arrived at the store, my vision was dazzled by all the shiny charms and snake rope charm bracelets and by the time I walked out there, I had already spent twice the amount of what I was originally wanting to spend.

Did I regret it? Not at all. When I looked down on on my right wrist and saw the sparkle of those pink crystal hearts, knowing I would add a charm for every 30 miles, I knew it was the start of something special.
